Marrakech
This southern Berber city is rich in history and tradition. Even now Morocco's second largest city still retains an exotic centre with is bewitching city square of Djemaa el Fna - home of snake charmers, acrobats, musicians, herb doctors, story tellers and amazing food stalls.
This square is right at the heart of the medina and the seventy metre high, twelfth century Koutoubia minaret just beside the square makes a useful and fascinating landmark.
South of Djemaa el Fnaais a sprawl of souks - but there is a pattern, and each small square is devoted to a particular craft; kaftans, whole sheepskins, cosmetics , herbs for magic and of course rugs and carpets. The best times to visit are in the early morning, 6.30 - 8 am and later afternoon 4 - 5 pm.
The Marrakech Museum housed in a magnificent 19th century palace with its fascinating display of Moroccan art, sculpture and a restoration of a hammam.
