The Atlas Mountains
The High Atlas Mountains are North Africa's greatest mountain range Djebel Touubkal at 4,167 metres is the highest peak in Africa - but for the tourist this stunning peaked area of the country is immediately accessible on foot as it is very easy to hire mules, muleteers and mountain guides.
Trekking is very popular as is mountain biking, rock climbing and even skiing in the winter.
As well as breathtaking scenery the Berber stone and clay villages built on rocky slopes are a joy to wander in and the people remarkably friendly - and if you are lucky you might even be invited to join in the indigenous ahouache dance - where men and women join together in wide circles.
